Every year TDU reports on our union's highest paid officials to let you decide who's earning the money, who's not, and what should be done about it. Teamsters can all agree that we should pay union officers and staff fairly, and expect them to work hard for the members in return. Click here to see last year's report. Others may need to be replaced by fresh leaders from the ranks. Two of the very highest on the list will not be there next year: John Coli of Chicago has pled guilty to taking employer payoffs; and his associate Becky Strzechowski resigned after Coli was indicted.Forged in fire contestants websites
One official near the top of the list last year was Rome Aloise. This year, his name does not appear, because he is serving a two-year suspension for employer payoffs, and pages of corruption charges. Aloise is planning to come back, with all his salaries, and even wants to be Teamster president. The majority of the officials in the report who received multiple salaries from the IBT were called on to donate to the Hoffa-Hall campaign in Multiple salaries should not be handed out as political favors or patronage.
This non-partisan report, which has been published annually for some 37 years, has made our union stronger. It worked. When members got the right to vote for the first time intop officials making bloated salaries dropped out the race, because members were armed with information. Teamster salaries now are in the mid-range of what other major unions pay.
This list also includes some professional union staff, including attorneys. Exposing past greed and excess has helped clean out corruption and freed up more union funds for organizing and building union power. One specific victory members have won is a reasonable limit on the salaries, specified in the Teamster Constitution Article V, Section 1. TDU stands for keeping these reasonable limits in place, and putting our union funds to good use with hard-working organizers and programs that build Teamster power.
Union-busters who try to use union salaries to attack unions should look in the mirror.

Shea effectively controlled the convention because the Chicago locals—representing nearly half the IBT's membership —supported his candidacy en bloc. The new grouping elected Edward L. Turley of Chicago as secretary-treasurer and Albert Young as general organizer. The union, like most unions within the American Federation of Labor AFL at the time, had a largely decentralized structure, with a number of local unions that governed themselves autonomously and tended to look only after their own interests in the geographical jurisdiction in which they operated.
During Shea's presidency, the entire teamsters union was notoriously corrupt. Several major strikes occupied the union in its first three years.
In Novemberteamsters employed by the Chicago City Railway went out on strike. Shea attempted to stop sympathy strikes by other teamster locals, but three locals walked out and eventually disaffiliated over the sympathy-strike issue. In 10, teamsters struck in support of locked-out tailors at Montgomery Wardand eventually more than 25, teamsters manned the picket lines.
Shea was re-elected again in andalthough significant challenges to his presidency occurred each time. Tobin of Boston was elected Shea's successor by a vote of to 94 in August Tobin was president of the Teamsters from to Although he faced opposition in his re-election races inandhe never faced opposition again until his retirement in The Teamsters began to expand dramatically and mature organizationally under Tobin.
He pushed for the development of "joint councils" to which all local unions were forced to affiliate. Varying in geographical and industrial jurisdiction, the joint councils became important incubators for up-and-coming leadership and negotiating master agreements which covered all employers in a given industry.
Tobin also actively discouraged strikes in order to bring discipline to the union and encourage employers to sign contracts, and founded and edited the union magazine, the International Teamster. Tobin undertook long jurisdictional battles with many unions during this period.
While the Teamsters lost this battle inwhen the AFL awarded jurisdiction to the Brewers, they won when the issue came before the AFL Executive Board again inwhen the Brewers were still recovering from their near-elimination during Prohibition.
Teamster membership stood at just 82, in Tobin took advantage of the wave of pro-union sentiment engendered by the passage of the National Industrial Recovery Actand by union membership had increased nearly 65 percent toByTobin had a dues-paying membership of ,—making the Teamsters the fastest-growing labor union in the United States.
One of the most significant events in union history occurred in A group of radicals in Local in Minneapolis —led by Farrell DobbsCarl Skoglundand the Dunne brothers Ray, Miles and Grantall members of the Trotskyist Communist League of America —began successfully organizing coal truck drivers in the winter of Member outrage was extensive, and in August he was forced to recharter the local as Extensive organizing also occurred in the West.
Harry Bridgesradical leader of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union ILWUwas leading "the march inland"—an attempt to organize warehouse workers away from shipping ports.
But corruption became even more widespread in the Teamsters during the Tobin administration. Bythe union was considered the most corrupt in the United States, and the most abusive towards its own members. Tobin vigorously defended the union against such accusations, but also instituted many constitutional and organizational changes and practices which made it easier for union officials to engage in criminal offenses.
By the beginning of World War IIthe Teamsters was one of the most powerful unions in the country, and Teamster leaders were influential in the corridors of power. Union membership had risen more than percent between and toTobin to be the official White House liaison to organized labor, and later that year chair of the Labor Division of the Democratic National Committee.
Because of Roosevelt's strong relationship with Tobin and the union's large membership, the President delivered his speech before the Teamster convention.

While still others we represent are on the front line, meeting the needs of the general public and risking the possibility of being exposed. They are doing their jobs every day, not just for the paycheck, but because it is the right thing to do.

Fitzsimmons was elected Local business manager inLocal vice president inand at Hoffa's insistence an international union vice president of the Teamsters in When Harold J.
Gibbons resigned as Hoffa's executive assistant in December after a failed coup against the indicted Teamsters president, Hoffa appointed Fitzsimmons to the office. After failed appeals, Hoffa entered prison in Marchand attempted to run the union from jail through Fitzsimmons. But there is no certainty that Hoffa intends to let Fitzsimmons run anything.
Indeed, few other Teamster big wigs even pretend that the chunky, amiable Hoffa right bower has the capacity to hold the union together for long.
Fitzsimmons and others even denied that they were doing work on Hoffa's orders. Fitzsimmons rapidly solidified his own hold on the Teamsters presidency throughout He had permitted the International vice presidents greater latitude in their own affairs and delegated significant authority to them, winning their allegiance. Fitzsimmons also began taking the union in new directions.
In July he and Walter Reutherpresident of the United Auto Workers formed a new national trade union centerthe Alliance for Labor Actionto organize unorganized workers and pursue leftist political and social projects.
On June 19,Hoffa resigned as Teamsters president and Fitzsimmons was elected international president in his own right on July 9, Fitzsimmons engaged in a notorious jurisdictional and organizing dispute with the United Farm Workers UFW from toraiding the smaller union and establishing a new national farm workers' union to compete with it. The series of raids and counter-raids, repudiated contracts, and public relations attacks began in December when Fitzsimmons ordered a no-raid and organizing non-compete agreement with the UFW dissolved and Teamsters contract negotiators to re-open contracts.
In OctoberFitzsimmons ended a long-running jurisdictional dispute with the United Brewery Workersand the Brewery Workers merged with the Teamsters. ByJimmy Hoffa was planning to seize the presidency of the Teamsters again. Fitzsimmons oversaw national trucking negotiations again inwhich led to major wage gains. Once again, the contract expired and the Teamsters engaged in a national trucking strike. An insurgent reform group, which later adopted the name Teamsters for a Democratic Unionissued a massive report accusing Fitzsimmons and other Teamsters of corruption and suppressing democracy in the union and picketed the June Teamsters convention.
To those who say it's time to reform this organization, that it's time that the officers quit selling out the membership, I say to them, go to hell.
